Class - Wednesday 09/19/2012

Today we had our final group presenting.
Sports and Physics

Mallory - Basketball
Mallory went over the different statistics and how they are improved through analysis. We talked about free throws in the NBA and how in 1960 they were 68% and in 1965 it was 69%.  They wanted to know from that point why it has not gone up.
A mechanical engineer developed what he said was the perfect free throw.

  • Aim at the backboard
  • back spin 3 revolutions
  • 52 degree angle
  • This is for a 6'6'' player
  • Players can increase accuracy by 20%

Nick - Golf
Nick went through newtons laws and how they apply to the golf swing. The golf swing can be broken down and analyzed. They take pictures during a swing and then can see how accuartely you match the perfect swing.

Anna - NFL
Anna talked about the NFL and applied Newtons laws to it. She took the pythagorean theorem and applied it to a sideline run  and how the defense needs to calculate the C^2  to make sure they are where they need to be. Then also talked about what mass is needed to stop the force. She also talked about the football and how cars resemble the same shape.

Chris - Soccer
Chris showed a video on the soccer goalie. The time the goalie has to react is such very tiny window.

Lexie - Baseball
Lexie talked about the different pitches and why they occur. She talked about how the air resistance and the stitching on the ball create these effects.

For Next class bring a scholarly article.

Friday Presentation
Fandom

Steve Sinclair
Vesectomys go up during March Madness, people plan on sitting around.
Steve talked about how March Madness is very consuming. He talked about the pros and cons of it. The con was that workers are going to be much less productive during this time. They are more focused on the sports and less on their jobs. The pros were that it actually gave the workers something to bond over. People need to feel connected and to be a part of something. Sports are a way for people to actually bond and feel a sense of connection.

Justin
Social Identity Theory, sports actually play a huge part in who you are. For males it is very important for them to be popular and socially accepted. Women also but now as much. The teams you choose and follow usually have something in common. Geographic location, TV channels available, local radio, and others in the community will usually help define who you follow.

Jackson
Sports and religion
A true fan has sports revolving around every aspect in his life. People actually get the same feeling from a sporting event as they would from a religious ceremony. They use a lot of the same words, sacrifice, prayer, etc.

Derek
The business of baseball
types of fans

  1. temporary
  2. local
  3. fanatic
  4. disfunctional
